The End of a Successful Partnership: Reflecting on Our Impact with CAMFED
We are thrilled to share the remarkable results of our three-year commitment to CAMFED Tanzania, which has far surpassed our expectations. Our partnership aimed to support marginalized girls from the Mvomero and Ulanga districts in completing secondary education, and the outcome has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Key Achievements:
-
Originally targeted 366 girls to complete lower or upper secondary school, but the project actually helped 964 girls.
- 869 girls (aged 15-17) completed lower secondary education.
- 85 young women (aged 18-20) completed upper secondary education.
-
Outstanding Academic Success:
- Girls supported by the project had a graduation rate of 98.5%, significantly higher than the 42% national average.
- 325 girls are now enrolled in further education, while 544 have joined the CAMFED Association, which provides access to opportunities like entrepreneurship, training, or additional education.
-
High Progression and Attendance Rates:
- An impressive 94.9% of girls progressed to the next grade throughout the project.
- The average attendance rate reached 94%, surpassing the projected target of 86%.
-
Impact Beyond Education:
- 74 Transition Guides mentored 1,394 girls, providing essential skills and support.
- A CAMFED survey showed 43% of girls mentored by the guides had started a business, with 26% continuing their education.
- Transition guides also advocated for girls’ education through Ulanga Community Radio, reaching 300,000 listeners.
-
Community Impact:
- CAMFED Association members from Mvomero and Ulanga districts extended their support, helping 8,342 children with essential supplies like uniforms, food, and sanitary products.
A Student’s Voice:
“I felt so relieved … as my mother was unable to fully meet my educational needs. Additionally, because I lived far from school, CAMFED covered my accommodation costs, closer to school. This enabled me to study diligently and adhere better to my school timetable.”

The Way Forward:
The success of this project demonstrates the incredible resilience and potential of these young women despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, natural disasters, and economic fluctuations. At GIFT, we are incredibly proud to have partnered with CAMFED for our first philanthropic initiative. We have gained invaluable insights from their holistic approach to education.
Thank you for your support in making this possible. Together, we are changing lives.
